Weâre sitting on the ground of the observatory, and Iâm a little disgruntled. âI didnât even get a chance to tell her Iâm an alien, not a cursed troll.â
âWait. What? Youâre an alien?â Ajax asks, his jaw dropping. Then he shakes his head as if to clear it. âActually, that makes a lot of sense.â
âYeah.â Draikh smirks at me. âI never really believed that story about the witch.â
âYeah, Iââ My shoulders straighten when I hear the door creak open.
Who could possibly be coming to the observatory right now? Itâs a stupid question, really, seeing as how you can only observe the stars at night. But Iâd imagined this to be a safe place where we could find some solace.
And that safe place is being invaded.
But my breath catches when I spot the person standing in the doorway. Her hair tumbles down her back, and her eyes are wide, most likely with fear. Saturn stares right at me.
I really hate the fact my mate is scared of me. Scared of all of us.
âSaturn,â I whisper.
The guys clamber about, getting to their feet, and I hear their sighs of relief, but I donât take my eyes off Saturn even for the second it would take to glance at them. Not when she might run again.
âI-I didnât know youâd be here,â she tells us in a hurry, and Iâm almost certain sheâs going to leave.
âPlease donât go,â I say, taking a step towards her.
She backs away from me.
I hate it. That one little movement. I want her to come closer, not pull away. I want to take her in my arms and tell her that Iâll love her forever. I want to make love to her. But I canât do any of that because my beautifulâunfortunately humanâmate is terrified of me.
âWe just want to talk,â Ajax says.
Talk. I canât think of anything worse. Iâm not good at talking. Mostly because Iâm so used to having to keep secrets from everyone. Even my friends. But not with Saturn. Sheâs my mate. My family. There doesnât have to be any secrets between us.
I can tell her everything. Who I am. Where Iâm from. Everything. And now that Ajax and Draikh are part of our family unit, I can tell them everything, too.
âWeâre sorry we scared you,â Draikh tells her.
She steps farther into the room, the door closing with a bang behind her. The sound makes her jump, and I want to rush towards her and wrap her in my arms. I feel like I should be protecting her from everything that scares her.
Except itâs me sheâs scared of.
âI went back,â she murmurs quietly.
âWent back?â I ask.
âTo the concert. But you were already gone. I do want to talk. This isâ¦â She waves her arm vaguely in the air, clearly at a loss for words.
I sit back down on the floor, trying to make myself seem less intimidating. It doesnât really work. But the other guys do the same, and soon Saturn is sitting down only a few feet away from us.
